Migrants are bridge builders between their countries of origin and the countries in which they currently live and work. With their skills, ideas, experience and contacts, they are key drivers of change in both settings and help to ensure that their countries of origin can face the future with confidence. Many migrants contribute to their home countries’ development while living in destination countries like Germany and engaging themselves in migrant associations.
At the Centre for International Migration and Development (CIM), which is jointly run by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the German Federal Employment Agency (BA), this development potential is recognized and supported.
On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), CIM supports diaspora organisations in Germany, which get involved in non-profit projects in their countries of origin. For example, these organisations support cooperation among universities, provide further training for teachers and doctors, or raise awareness on issues such as energy efficiency and gender equality. They thus facilitate knowledge-sharing between their home and host countries, promote innovation and help to improve local people’s living conditions. CIM support their commitment to development. CIM decided to support Mapubi e.V. due to their innovative project idea, which includes a high level of knowledge sharing, the launch of a new technology and is addressing a major challenge in Nigeria.
